    Teaching Piano

    Jeff Stokely

After teaching all ages of students, and beginners through advanced, for more than 25 years, I am kind of old-fashioned in that I want students to learn to read music properly; so I use a variety of method-books such as the Schaum and Thompson methods, which came out in the 1940s. Along with these old-fashioned books, however, I enjoy modern technology – digital pianos/keyboards, played along with computer-generated backgrounds.

Every student is different, and I try to take each one where she/he’s at, whether a child-prodigy, or a learning-disabled student, or anyone in between. Good reading and technical skills are important, but the fact remains that music is primarily an aural art-form, and I want the student to create art; therefore I am genuinely interested in the music each student listens to and enjoys. I want them to at least be able to play chords along with a favorite tune on their iPods. Additionally, I have often been introduced to new music I might not have otherwise heard – so it is a learning experience for me too!

True musicianship and virtuosity does not come easily, “overnight”. They come with a good deal of effort and practice. So be patient – you will get there.
